Why Financial Wellbeing Matters for People with Additional Needs

There are approximately 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, yet research has found that 32% don’t have a bank account in their own name and 87% of adults with a learning disability risk financial harm through informal workarounds.

Financial language can be complex and confusing, whilst the move away from cash in recent years has also meant that many people with a learning disability have faced further barriers to financial independence.

We believe that Financial Education and Wellbeing should be accessible for all and that people with neurodiversities should be empowered to make money work for them, utilising their unique skills and strengths. We partner with schools, colleges and community groups across the UK to provide training and support for groups with special educational needs and disabilities, a learning disability, and/or Autism, to help on their journey towards Financial Wellbeing.

Our Approach

We offer engaging, activity-based Money Workshops designed for:

  • Young people (ages 11–19) with Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • Groups of adults with a learning disability and/or Autism

You can also download free Financial Capability resources for people with learning disabilities at the bottom of the page.

Our face-to-face Workshops are tailored to the needs and abilities of each group:

  • For young people: sessions fit within usual class time and work well for small groups.
  • For adults: Workshops typically last 1.5 hours.
  • Each Workshop includes 3–4 activities, adaptable to different learning levels.

We recommend an initial discussion with us prior to booking, to work out which activities are best suited to your group. Our workshops our are very flexible, and consultants are able to adapt the content to go at an easily understandable pace, with the support from staff that usually work with the group and know them best.

Activities cover topics such as reading a payslip, saving, money personalities, what is money used for, budgeting, needs and wants, scams and fraud, reading a bank statement and guessing the price.
